The city of Detroit, already everyone's favorite punching bag, just declared bankruptcy. The roughly $18B in outstanding debts make this easily the "largest municipal bankruptcy filing in American history," more than quadruple the debt that the previous biggest loser, Jefferson County, Ala., was carrying at the time of its 2011 default.
