Boing Boing has a video tour of one of the world's 50 surviving Futuro Houses, UFO-like structures up for purchase in the late '60s and early '70s. Why did they stop making them? Well, like for other abandoned structures, use became a financial burden; the houses stopped being produced (and thus voguish) because an oil crisis in the mid-1970s made plastic prohibitively pricy.
