In 1996, after five years and millions of glass beads, artist Liza Lou completed this staggering artwork, a kitchen model completely covered in beads. Lou used tweezers to painstakingly set each bead, from the patterned wall, to the refrigerator, to a crumpled bag of potato chips and a six-pack of Budweiser. The finished product was displayed alongside a beaded "backyard" at the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 1998, before the New York-born Lou packed up and moved to South Africa to found a collaborative studio with Zulu bead artisans.
