Location: Sanibel, Fla.
Price: $23,000,000
The Skinny: A sandy barrier island on Florida's Gulf Coast, Sanibel has benefitted from conservation-minded residents over the years, who supported the preservation of much of the island's northern coast as a wildlife refuge and who established covenants to limit development. Still, despite these measures, there are still a few giant mansions on the island, but thankfully, they are located on large lots. This sprawling Mediterranean mansion was built by grocery entrepreneur A.J. Scribante—who created one of the first regional pricing databases for supermarkets—in 2009 on 5.4 beachfront acres. Four years later, the 10,000-square-foot house has come up for sale for the first time, asking a staggering $23M. Known as Mandalay, the property includes just three bedrooms and five bathrooms in all that space, but sits on 700-feet of direct beachfront with easy access to a long, uninhabited stretch of white sand. The mansion also boasts a saltwater swimming pool and hot tub, shielded from ocean breezes in an interior courtyard.
