Luxury Glass Home Comes Fully Furnished For $8.495M

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: La Quinta, Calif.
Price: $8,495,000
The Skinny: This striking glass box in California's desert resort community of La Quinta has many things to recommend it, though the listing description reading "Spectacular Mid-Century Modern Estate just completed!" is a little bit of a headscratcher: the home only dates back to late 2013, which is about 50 years too late to accurately carry that label.

While it's definitely influenced by the wonderful collection of mid-mod classics just up the freeway in Palm Springs, here form trumps function so thoroughly that the utilitarian gestures of the movement have been transformed into elephantine displays of wealth. Which is not all bad! Who says all new Southern California luxury homes have to be sprawling Spanish Colonial Revivals and mock-Mediterraneans?

This home takes full advantage of its scenic location, with fantastic views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and surrounding golf course, and indoor/outdoor living spaces perfect for enjoying the desert climate. Inside, the ground floor is mostly taken up by a great room, with open-plan living and dining areas, a kitchen, and a glass-walled wine room tucked under the main stairs. The 8,190 square-foot home is asking $8.495M, which includes the designer-selected furnishings.
