Architectural Digest just announced that architect and designer David Rockwell will be working with—of all people—actress and beloved ping pong aficionado Susan Sarandon to bring an "urban loft" feel to this year's Oscars greenroom. Sarandon, a five-time Academy Award nominee (she won Best Actress for her work in Dead Man Walking), will be curating an installation of digital images "dedicated to the rich history of the Oscars," write the AD PR people, as well as crafting a gallery wall of film stills. Unlike the effusive glam of last year's Gatsby-ish ensemble accrued by Madeline Stuart, Rockwell—who designed the Academy Awards set pieces in 2009 and 2010—seems to be going for achromatic understatement, a contemporary divergence not only from 2013's Deco space, but also the Old Hollywood, 1940s-style rooms Waldo Fernandez and Michael Smith drummed up in 2013 and 2012, respectively. Instead of gleaning inspiration from the '20s or '40s, Rockwell seems to have been inspired by far more recent history, when warehouse windows and downtown Manhattan lofts were so widely coveted—an era that the Times has declared long gone, despite evidence to the contrary.
