On contention about whether architect Norma Merrick Sklarek was the first licensed black female architect: "Norma herself believed she was the first. A New Yorker through and through, she nevertheless had a huge role in Los Angeles for many years, during her time with Victor Gruen, now Gruen Associates. Her memory is precious to me, not only as a mentor, but because she sponsored me for fellowship in the American Institute of Architects.
