Has this piece of Palm Springs modernism died and gone to heaven? No, it just had its interior completely redone in light and airy fashion by architect and designer Philip DeCancio, who shares the place with broker Stephen Skuris. Though it was recently showcased in Modernism Week's Man About Modernism video series, it's a relatively young pup for the style—especially when compared to Modernism Week's show house—having only been built in 1987. Designed by architect Stan Sackley, who has left his mark on several other homes in the Indian Canyons neighborhood, it was brightened up a great deal by DeCancio, who for starters, did away with the black granite and mirrors that used to cover the fireplace, which divides the open-plan living and dining areas. Casa Sugar recently toured the home, which is about as balmy and fine as they come.
↑The Eero Saarinen chairs and dining table situate the place firmly in mid-century territory. Saarinen once described the table's central pedestal design as an attempt to "clear up the slum of legs in the US home." Popular up until the mid-1970s, terrazzo flooring continues its sweeping comeback underneath.
↑A well-appointed seating nook sits just past the foot of the bed. Out back, climbing greenery takes early strides toward masking a cement wall.
↑ A view from the front of the home, where a path of cement blocks leads the way inside. The pebble landscaping touches up against it at a few points, and also surrounds the backyard pool area.
