Location: San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Hotel Name: Tierra Atacama
The Skinny: Located on the Altiplano of the Andes Mountains, the Chilean resort of Tierra Atacama offers spectacular natural beauty to go with its modern design and stylish interiors. It's an incredible place, but judging from the models in their photos they cater more to the hot-stone-massage and daily-journaling set (and their raffishly stylish offspring) than the sit-by-the-pool-with-a-beer crowd, so set your expectations accordingly. Whichever crowd you run with, there's the whole of the Atacama Desert to explore if you choose to ignore your fellow guests, with the hotel running excursions to the various volcanoes, hot springs, and mountain streams that populate this extraordinarily scenic corner of the world. The resort offers king and twin rooms, with many of the suites featuring views of the nearby Licancabur Volcano. It's not cheap ($2,500 for a couple for two nights) but if you're looking for a quiet place to unwind and churn out the first chapter of your long-gestating novel in longhand, this might be your place. If you're looking to drink beer and go alpaca-tipping, you might want to take a pass.
