Could Whistler Area Get New Backcountry Ski Area?

Rumors about a new ski area near Whistler have people talking and powder hounds dreaming of fresh tracks on uncrowded runs. Michel Beaudry, a writer for Whistler's Pique News Magazine, called for a new ski area in a February 27 editorial. Beaudry complained of crowds and long lines at Whistler Blackcomb, instead advocating a new Silverton-style ski area that's big on fresh tracks and small on luxury. Beaudry's dream includes a small daylodge, a patrol shack, and a repurposed fixed-grip chairlift that shuttles expert skiers to backcountry bliss. A follow up piece published March 6 elaborates on how difficult (and expensive!) this project could be, but tell us Curbediverse, does this sound like a good idea?
