In January 1923, America's first megachurch opened in L.A.'s Echo Park. The massive, theater-like domed building with 25 doors became a significant presence in the neighborhood, acquiring much of the nearby land and revitalizing the area. As one church supporter claimed in a letter to the editor, Los Angeles had been "rowing better since the temple was built." [Curbed LA]
