Curbed SF sheds some light on the history of Angel Island, the largest island in San Francisco Bay, otherwise known as "the Ellis Island of the West." Other things it's been known as over the years: a proposed cattle ranch, a squatter's paradise, a quarantine station, a staging area for WWII POWs, a Nike missile base, and a shooting location for Robert Redford's The Candidate.
