Whistler Wins Title Of Most Dog-Friendly Ski Town

As part of Outdoors Week 2014, Curbed Ski searched for the best ski town for dogs in North America. Six contenders made the cut, and today we announce the winner of the poll.

The dog owners of ski towns have spoken: Whistler is the best place for dogs in ski country. And while North Lake Tahoe and Telluride battled it out for second place, Whistler dominated this competition. Let's take a look at why the pups are so fond of this British Columbian oasis.

What makes Whistler so great for dogs? Plenty of dog-friendly amenities, a laid-back vibe, and an outdoor lifestyle that's heavy on the water-filled fun. What dog wouldn't love all of that?

Where to stay: We appreciate that high-end resorts like the Fairmont Chateau, the Four Seasons, and the Nita Lake Lodge all offer pet friendly accommodations. The Fairmont even offers the Furrmont Club, an exclusive dog-friendly program that provides plush dog beds, dog bowls, baggies, turndown, and dog towels for paw scrubs after a walk. Want to bring Fido but don't want to shell out a bunch of cash? Head over here for a full list of pet-friendly accommodations.

Where to play: The numerous lakes and rivers in British Colombia make Whistler a top choice for water-loving hounds. In town, keep Fido leashed, but at Alta Lake, Lost Lake, and Alpha Lake, there are designated off leash areas so dogs can cool of too. And while some trails are off limits to pups, check out the Whistler Valley Trail, the Sea to Sky Trail, or the Nairn Falls for dog friendly hikes. In the winter, dogs, cross country skiers, hikers and snowshoers are welcome on the groomed section of Valley Trail from Meadow Park to Rainbow Park. Whistler Olympic Park also has designated dog friendly ski and snowshoe trails.

Events: There are plenty of Fido-friendly events in Whistler year round. Check out the Whistler Animal Shelter for up-to-date listings.

Services: Head this way for a complete list of veterinary clinics, dog sitters, and grooming services in Whistler.
