The words "Curbed Ski" and "awards season" have never appeared in the same sentence - oh wait, we were close once – until now. After its premiere at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, "Force Majeure" has gone on to gain sleeper hit status along with a Golden Globe nomination and a spot on the Oscar shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film (official nominations to be announced on Thursday, January 15). In the movie, Swedish director Ruben Östlund tells an all too relatable tale of a family ski vacation that turns disastrous. In this case, due to an avalanche that rocks their picture-perfect lunch at a fancy French Alps resort. Östlund totally nails the ski humor and culture in the film, as he should. It was skiing films where the director got his start in the '90s with Euro-classics like "Addicted," "Free Radicals" and "Free Radicals 2." But what Curbed Ski really wants to know is where exactly is this breathtaking enclave and how do we get there?
With exterior shots filmed on location at Les Arcs in Savoie, France, the family holes up on holiday at the Hôtel Club MMV Les Mélèze. Located in the heart of the network of five ski areas, which is part of the mega Paradiski system, the property is just steps away from the piste with sweeping views of Mont Blanc. Although the film's interior scenes were shot at a hotel in Sweden, the guest rooms look equally as sleek thanks to a full renovation for the 2014/2015 season. Rates start from $856.23 (€725) per night, but a quick search on TripAdvisor resulted in mixed reviews. Its iconic French Alps locale combined with Fredrik Wenzel's stunning cinematography still has us tempted to go ski it for ourselves. Until you plan your next family vacation abroad, catch "Force Majeure" in select theaters or on-demand.
