Comprised of 48 buildings decorated in exuberant colors and floral tiles, Barcelona's Hospital de Sant Pau is known as the largest hospital complex in a modernist style. Designed by the Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner starting in 1901, the colorful art nouveau hospital was not finished until 1930, and is considered a masterpiece of early 20th-century Spanish architecture. Domènech i Montaner believed that sick people would recover better if they were surrounded by beauty. The imaginatively designed building, which was inscribed on Unesco's World Heritage List in 1997, was a functional hospital until 2003, but recently underwent a major renovation and restoration to transform it into a museum and cultural center.
