Trippy Patterned Facade Connects Historic Building to Addition

To join a historic schoolhouse in the medieval German city of Iphofen to its new 3,230-square-foot extension by local firm Jacklein Architects, artist Reiner John completed a glassy connection with a reflective facade. The reflective pattern isn't random: since the site is surrounded by vineyards, the artist chose to create a grape foliage pattern, abstracted with a pixelated treatment. Standing in clear contrast to the surrounding stone structures, the glassy connection appears to have mood swings over the course of a day, going from a warm yellow tone in the morning to a mellow blue at dusk.
