Joining the long list of architects who've designed remarkable one-of-a-kind residences for their families, brothers Carlos Ignacio Cruz Elton and Alberto Cruz Elton of Santiago-based practice Estudio Valdés Arquitectos has completed a vacation cottage for their own use, located in a forest along Chile's Lake Ranco. Looking like the lovechild of a derelict barn and glass cabin, this secluded retreat was constructed from salvaged trusses of an earthquake-damaged barn, along with fresher local timber frames and large thermal-insulated glazing. The finished result boasts a mostly open living/dining area and more private partitioned rooms clad in remnants of the old barn.
