Price: $1,325,000
At least half-a-decade older than other awesome converted firehouses we've featured recently, this historic firehouse in Alexandria, Virginia is unsurprisingly brimming with history. The circa-1855 building was built for a volunteer company that used horse-drawn fire trucks. Today, it still retains the original brick and pine flooring, the heavy dangling rope that predated the fire pole, as well as embedded steel rails that, per the listing, "used to guide the metal wheels of the early fire engines into the structure."
According to a property description on the
National Trust for Historic Preservation website, the renovation was completed by Joanne Goldfarb, a local architect who specializes in adaptive reuse of historic buildings. Co-existing with all the original features are more polished modern updates like contemporary kitchen and bathroom. The three-bedroom, 2,329-square-foot home's soaring 24-foot-high ceilings, with tall glass doors and central light wells help the rather narrow house sandwiched between two buildings feel a bit more airy.
