File this under: old restaurants and bars that find new edge by way of architecture. Thanks to Portuguese firm FCC Arcquitectera, the deteriorating stone-built Cella Bar located on the western coast of Portugal's Pico Island has been restored and transformed with a curvaceous modern extension inspired by whales and wine barrels. The construction of the bulbous addition, which features rounded windows and a scenic rooftop deck, also nods to the immediate surroundings, incorporating local materials like basalt, concrete, and cryptomeria wood. The whole juxtaposition feels surprisingly fitting.
