Solar-Powered Pop-Up Library Rises Near Toronto

The heartwarming pop-up community library idea has taken a design-y turn in Newmarket, Canada, a suburb of Toronto. Designed pro-bono by Canadian firm Atelier Kastelic Buffey, the new "Story Pod" installation didn't just pop up (in a new civic square, for the curious), but it can also pop open: during daytime, the black 64-square-foot structure expand out to reveal shelves of books and built-in seating, and at night, the whole thing tucks back into an abstract but well-lit urban marker. LED lights powered by rooftop solar panels make it a bright one.
