Coal Plants in Utah Under Fire As Skiers Fight Air Pollution

The haze over Salt Lake City (now Ski City) each winter is a well-known problem to local skiers, but now the issue is receiving national attention due to Utah native and pro skier Angel Callinson's recent editorial in Outside Magazine. Callinson is asking skiers to rally behind her in an effort to force Utah's coal-fired power plants to implement more pollution control. A recent Sierra Club report states that more than 40 percent of the smog and haze-causing air pollution from Utah's electric sector is from two coal plants, Rocky Mountain Power's Hunter and Huntington plants. Callinson and company believe that the two plants put Utah's fresh air (and therefore the $12 billion outdoor sports economy) at risk.
