What's more English than a charming 17th-century cottage? This Grade II-listed residence (that's a historic designation in the United Kingdom for the uninitiated) underwent a conversion recently into a thoroughly modern home in a revamp overseen by local architect Simon Shaw. Today, the original cottage—which accommodates the master suite, a set of two bedrooms, and an additional bathroom—also sports a sleek two-story, timber-clad modern addition. The new contemporary wing—open-plan, of course—holds a new kitchen and dining room, and, on its roof, a terrace. Inside, Old World and modern details merge: bits of the exposed-steel structure in the new wing are visible, especially where the old structure is joined with the new, but complement the timber beams visible on ceilings and walls throughout the original home. Take a closer look, right this way.
