Would You Pay $409,000 For This Chair?

New, 3 comments

Legendary Japanese designer Shiro Kuramata's Miss Blanche armchair sold at auction last week for £269,000 (around $409,000). The chair takes its name from the central character in A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche Dubois, who served as the piece's inspiration. The plexiglass roses suspended in resin are meant to symbolize Blanche's dreamlike shell of delusion. Of course, none of that speaks to the central question: was it worth $409,000? Let's do some quick pros and cons. Cons: doesn't look like that comfortable of a chair. Pros: exemplar of the work of one of the most unique and influential designers of the 20th century.

It's a close one.
