Though it's not clear if anyone was even trying, the hotel that inspired one of the greatest situational comedies in television history will not be saved from demolition. A stay at the Gleneagles Hotel in 1970 with led Monty Python member John Cleese to create the show Fawlty Towers, with its title character, Basil Fawlty, based on the hotel's infamously disagreeable proprietor. Now the Gleneagles is being torn down to make room for a retirement home, so even though England is losing a little piece of history, at least the people who might appreciate that history (old people) are getting something out of the deal.
