R.I.P., the Inventor of the Heart-Shaped Hot Tub

Morris Wilkins, the man credited with inventing the heart-shaped hot tub, died of heart failure this Monday. He was 89. Wilkins created the first heart-shaped hot tub in 1963, five years after he opened Cove Haven Resort in the Poconos. The resort, with the help of a 1971 feature on heart-shaped hot tubs in LIFE, would go on to become America's most infamous love hotel. Wilkins also created the "seven-foot Champagne Glass Whirlpool bath," which is exactly what it sounds like: a giant champagne glass-shaped hot tub that fits two people. Unfortunately, that one never caught on.
