We Are Making Our Modern Skyscrapers Far Too Easy for King Kong to Climb

New, 5 comments

Lost in all the excitement about Bjark Ingels' just-revealed design for 2 World Trade Center is one crucial point, concisely state by Change.org petition-creator Caragh Poh: the "building is just a staircase for monsters." We're just going to go ahead and quote the entire petition, because trying to choose a single best part is impossible:

Please do not make buildings that only make it easier for King Kong to climb.
Dear Bjark Ingels,
Congratulations on the new reveal of Two World Trade , and also your very nice name. Both are a great accomplishment.
I'm creating this petition to ask you to consider a redesign. Though you have designed this building with wonderful reasons in mind, such as completing the framing of the memorial, bringing an even more enhanced skyline to the beautiful city of New York, creating a physical symbol of healing and togetherness, there is one glaring oversight. Your building makes it easier for King Kong to climb.
Your building is just a staircase for monsters.
I urge you to reconsider the design of this building. May I suggest just turning it upside down? I'm not sure if that's the right way to go, but it's certainly better than your way.
I've compiled a list of research materials below to bone up on your knowledge. Not all of these creatures have climbed buildings in these New York documentaries, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen when the cameras were not rolling. Thank you for your time

Ghostbusters (1984)
Mimic (1997)
Godzilla (1998)
Rosemary's Baby (1968) (Just a baby at the time, but he is now a 48 year old man and we should be more conscious of that in our daily lives.)
King Kong (1933)
King Kong (1976)
King Kong (2005) (Please note that I am not sure if this was all the same King Kong, or if each King Kong was the son of the previous King Kong. If it is the latter, then each King Kong's father must have died before their own documentary was released or they would have been called Prince Kong. I have a lot of questions for scientists and historians about this, so please let me know if you know of any.)
Best,
