Stone Mountain in Georgia has come under some scrutiny recently because it is a mountain with gigantic carvings of Confederate generals Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis etched into it. Some have even called for the carvings to be removed, but artist and Georgia native Mack Williams has a better idea. In a MoveOn petition that currently has over 5,000 signatures, he writes (in part):
By no means do we wish to erase or destroy the current carving, which, regardless of its context, is an impressive and historic work of art. We simply wish to add new carvings, of Atlanta hip-hop duo Outkast, to the mountainside. There's plenty of room.
I believe that Daddy Fat Sacks and Three Stacks should be carved riding in a Cadillac (as is their wont). This will help the new carving blend nicely with the Confederates who are on horseback. It's rare that a compromise comes along that is the perfect compromise, but here it is. Williams helpfully drew up a rendering of what the new carving would look like, and we can all agree that it's a big improvement. Even Big Boi himself (one half of Outkast, along with Andre 3000) is on board. But what do you think?
