This Swiss Elephant Habitat Looks a Bit Like a Geodesic Turtle

New, 1 comment

Why should humans get to have all the architectural fun? A recent outcropping of well-designed zoo habitats proves they don't to! Designed by local architect firm Markus Schietsch Architekten for the Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park at Zoo Zurich in Switzerland's capital, this elephant habitat comprises an elaborate (and huge, at about 73,000 square feet) wooden-and-ETFE plastic grid-shell roof and a glass-enclosed swimming pool for the the pachyderms' pleasure. The elephants on view can also roam free under the sky; a series of open-air spaces are connected to their domed, sheltered habitat.
