Lovely Cantilevered Extension Offers a Refuge During Floods

Australia is not the only place cooking up awesome residential extensions. Just look at this handsome and smart addition Nha4 Architects completed for a family in Vietnam. Since the project is located in Thái Hòa, a town where annual flood levels can go up to five feet, the designers logically responded by raising the new structure five feet above the ground as well. Whereas the adjoined original house is totally unprotected from flood water, the boxy new 753-square-foot volume cantilevers off a stone plinth and includes a living area, two bedrooms, bathroom, prayer room, small balconies, and a patio—altogether a neat, comfortable shelter for when floods inevitably strike again.
