Perched directly on Lake Michigan, Northwestern University's newest facility is sheathed in concrete but detailed with the school's signature shade of purple. Its designers—Woodhouse Tinucci Architects—describe the facility as "garage-like," and if it weren't for those violet plastic doors, we could easily see this building next to a minimalist mansion. The sailing center is low to the ground to preserve lakeside views seen from the adjacent campus. Don't get too envious though: these photos make the lakefront look like Maui. Those who have experienced the Chicago winter know otherwise.
