These High-Tech Masonry Blocks Could Revolutionize the Way We Build

A novel new building material is bringing together the best of both worlds: time-tested techniques and the efficacy of newfangled digital technology. The latest project from Berlin-based ZA Architects—led by architects Dmytro Zhuikov and Arina Agieieva— Smart Masonry builds upon traditional masonry techniques, but consists of 3D-printed components assembled speedily with robotic equipment. The resulting blocks are arranged in a complex, but minimal, lattice digitally optimized to eliminate the need for heavy load bearing walls and columns. The hope is that such structural advances can help us make houses, schools, and more, that are higher quality and age smarter, with less.
