When the Summit Fire in Southern California was threatening to jump onto Snow Summit's property on Sunday, the resort did what it's had to in recent drought years: start pumping. The ski area that sits on the edge of Big Bear Lake started up its snowmaking equipment and, instead of blowing flakes, poured water on the surrounding brush to deter the flames. Thankfully, the blaze did not reach resort property, and the 100-acre Summit Fire is now 50 percent contained. The conditions were bad enough Monday that area schools were closed, but evacuation orders for residents have now been lifted.
