Energy company Statoil has gotten approval from the Scottish government to build a floating wind firm—the first in the world—off the coast. "The simplicity of the high-wind design is what makes it so genius," said an executive at the company. Basically, enormous buoys will be floated in the water and will be topped with even more enormous turbines—the width of one of their rotor spans will be equivalent to two and a half soccer fields. The project, which is being called a pilot park, is expected to be up and running by 2017.
