With over 300 million daily active users and 95 million-plus photos and videos uploaded per day, Instagram is one of the world’s most popular social media apps. It’s also a treasure trove of data, aggregating what its users are into and where they are going.
The photo sharing app, which launched in 2011, recently revealed a list of the most popular travel hashtags, including the world’s most geotagged cities, most popular locations, and most Instagrammed museums of 2016.
Perhaps not surprisingly, New York City was the number one most geotagged city on Instagram in 2016. London came in second, followed by Moscow. Los Angeles came in sixth, giving the United States only two slots in the top 10. Russia made another showing with Saint Petersburg ranking number 7.
Specific locations-wise, however, the U.S. had a stronger showing, with three New York City destinations, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles taking up half the slots. Global Disney theme parks and Universal Studios theme parks ranked one and two respectively, while Manhattan’s Central Park ranked third, followed by Times Square.

And just for fun, the top food hashtags of 2016 are #turkey (most likely due to people tagging the country, and not the poultry), #pizza, and #sushi. For purposes of this article, let’s just say that #pizza is clearly the winner here.
