Covered Porch Turns Historic House Into Indoor-Outdoor Gem

We gush fairly often about the great variety of residential designs coming out of Australia these days—from extensions to new-build homes—but this is special. Sydney-based firm Luigi Rosselli Architects added an ornate covered porch to the back of this local listed "heritage building."

The series of shades and shutters on the extension filter light inside the house, and provide a new way to get out to the house's backyard pool and lawn from the open-plan kitchen and living room. The architects did what they could to preserve the original character of the house, too, keeping crown and door molding elements and the whitewashed, patterned ceiling. Take a look around.
