Welcome to Curbed Comparisons, a column that explores what one can rent (or buy!) for a set dollar amount in various cities across the U.S. Is one man's studio another man's townhouse? Let's find out! Today's price: $4,500,000. And theme? Island homes!

↑ Edgartown, MA (5 beds, 5.5 baths)—$4,450,000: This 3,654-square-foot waterfront home Martha's Vineyard, the Massachusetts summering destination favored by the Obamas and Hollywood celebs, features views of the Atlantic Ocean from every room, a lovely deck to lounge about when the weather's nice out, and a separate guest cottage. The interiors are quite airy with exposed beams and an open-plan living room kitchen.

↑ Kiawah Island, SC (5 beds, 5 baths)—$4,500,000:This 6,640-square-foot home sits on the eastern end of Kiawah Island, a resort community located 24 miles south of Charleston. The 2001-built property comes with more than 2,400 square feet of outdoor living space, including a covered veranda, sun decks, swimming pool, and outdoor kitchen and bar. Interior highlights include a two-story entry with a spiral staircase, elevator access to the three floors, and a home entertainment system.

↑ Lahaina, HI (5 beds, 4.5 baths)—$4,500,000: Located on the northwest coast of Maui, everyone's long-time favorite island in the world, this 4,203-square-foot home channels a bit of Bali in Hawaii. Oceanview decks can be found on all floors, including the breezy upper-level bedrooms. The 0.25-acre lot also includes a saltwater pool, water fall, and spa.

↑ Key Biscayne, FL (3 beds, 5 baths)—$4,495,000: This 3,100-square-foot residence is a beachfront corner penthouse in a 1998-built condo tower on Key Biscayne, which is just southeast of Miami. The pad, with tons of glass walls, balconies, and a generous open-air deck (jacuzzi included), boasts views of both the beach and city lights.

↑ Mercer Island, WA (4 beds, 4 baths)—$4,388,000: Surrounded by Seattle and its suburbs, Mercer Island is not the most exotic island out there, but this 5,050-square-foot home on its southeastern edge does offer tremendous views. Lake Washington can be experienced from most of the main living spaces, including the great room, family room, kitchen, and deck. There's also a three-car garage and private dock.
