One of the longest operating ski areas in North America is struggling to stay open, but officials in Steamboat Springs are working hard to keep the Howelsen Hill legacy alive. A spring landslide meant costly repairs for the local hill's Barrows chairlift, and city officials are now looking for ways to make the hill (and its ski jumping complex) more profitable. The Denver Post reports that Steamboat is considering a lift ticket tax, a creation of a parks and recreation district, and even the creation of a hut system on Howelsen and Emerald Mountain.
