The Darkest Color in the World Is Now Owned Exclusively by Artist Anish Kapoor

Other artists are not happy

A lot of people are asking the question "Can an artist own a color?" today, but rather that asking it philosophically, they're asking it practically and in response to the fact that it artist Anish Kapoor appears to now own a color. That color is vantablack, the world's blackest shade of black—so black, in fact, that it makes the above piece of aluminum foil look completely flat. Kapoor, who described the pigment in 2014 by saying, "Imagine a space that's so dark that as you walk in you lose all sense of where you are, what you are, and especially all sense of time," now owns the exclusive rights to the substance, which is simultaneously pretty cool and kind of a jerk-ish thing to do.
