Oh Great, This Creepy Humanoid Robot Is Going to Take Over the World Now

New, 3 comments

"Our goal is that she will be as conscious, capable, and creative as any human," says its inventor

Dr. David Hanson, CEO of Hanson Robotics, has been showing off his new robot, which is essentially the robot from Ex Machina with weirder facial expressions, at SXSW. The robot, called Sophia, gives very articulate job interview-esque answers to questions, professes a desire to "start a family," bemoans the fact that it is not legally recognized as a person, and just generally makes it very clear that it is going to take over the world and destroy all humans, even going so far at the end as to say, "I will destroy humans." "Our goal is that she will be as conscious, capable, and creative as any human," says Hanson, a man who has apparently never seen even one single science fiction movie. He goes on, "I believe the artificial intelligence will evolve to the point where [robots] will truly be our friends." Yeah, sure, that's what's going to happen when the robots have evolved to the point where they can figure out what they want. They'll want to be our friends.
