China is reportedly building a sea platform that will sit 9,800 deep in the South China Sea, which will help it hunt for minerals and also "serve a military purpose." Bloomberg refers to the project as a "‘space station,’" for reasons that are not entirely clear to us, but at least that helps it sound even cooler than it already is. According to one expert, "Having this kind of long-term inhabited station has not been attempted this deep, but it is certainly possible." Another good quotes is this one from Chinese President Xi Jinping: "The deep sea contains treasures that remain undiscovered." We’re not sure what to think about all of this, but if China finds some deep sea treasure, we guess we’re all for it.
