From Seattle to the Hamptons, Sweden to Australia, architects have been breathing new life into the familiar gabled house. This Austin example, conceived by local firm Baldridge Architects shows how the traditional pitched roof house can have as killer an indoor-outdoor experience as more contemporary layouts.
Comprising a low-slung, open-plan living space and a lofty modern gable on the side, the property wraps around a pool, a necessary indulgence under the hot Texas sun. The gabled part is also dramatically cantilevered, creating a carport on the street-facing side and shading a patio on the back (not to mention supporting a huge second-floor terrace.)
