The Largest Rooftop Solar Array in the USA Is in Neon-Drenched Vegas

Viva sustainable energy!

Las Vegas—capital of entertainment and weird celebrity mansions—has a new reason to shine this week. The city is now home to the country’s largest rooftop solar array, a 28-acre expanse of 26,000 photovoltaic panels atop the Mandalay Bay convention center.

The record was reached with the recent completion of a $70 million expansion to the building, which also added the last eight acres of rooftop space.

In sunny Las Vegas, the panels should produce enough electricity to meet 25 percent of the energy consumed by the entire Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino—roughly equivalent to the power needs of 1,340 average U.S. homes.
