The Woo Ji collection is an dainty set of abstract and sculptural table-top accessories and objets that incorporates elements of both traditional and contemporary design.
Created by Seoul-based design studio Craft Combine, Woo Ji comprises five small pieces including trays, a pencil holder, vase, and lamp. Hanji, a traditional Korean paper that is textured and thicker than normal paper, makes up the main component of the objects, and is either used as a single sheet, or layered to create a wood-veneer like material.
Focusing on the design process rather than a finished design as a goal, Craft Combine allowed the materials dictate the objects. The result is a curved element that figures as the main structure in each of the pieces. It is used as a trough-like tray supported by a wooden base and copper rods in one, or vertically as a pencil holder or vase, inverted as a support for a flat wooden tray, or used as a shade for a very small lamp.
