This modern spiritual retreat in the Utah desert employs gabions to construct a portion of its walls, establishing a unique way of incorporating the surrounding nature into its structure.
Designed by local firm Imbue Design, the "Buddhist Retreat" perches on a rocky cliff overlooking the Capitol Reef National Park and features a long rooftop terrace that functions as a "meditation deck." It appears to be level with the low crags of the mountains around the home, an effect that serves to further immerse an inhabitant (or meditator) within the serene landscape.
Below the deck and inside the two-story home are two bedrooms and an open living and dining space that opens up to mountain vistas thanks to expansive glazed walls. But it’s the rugged volcanic-rock-filled gabion walls grounding one of the home’s volumes that serve to plant the residence firmly within its natural environs.
