Smart home tech: what’s on your wish list?

New, 6 comments

Or are you totally skeptical?

Welcome to Friday Open Threads, a new series wherein we'll pass the mic to readers to speak up about topics of interest, distress, horror, etc. Have something you want discussed? Let us know.

From home automation veterans like Savant and Control4 to tech world heavy weights like Amazon Echo and Apple Homekit to all sorts of specific innovations for every room (Bidets! Smart baby monitors! Wireless charging furniture!), the home tech scene is buzzier than it’s ever been.

And consumers are all ears. According to a recent survey of 1,250 U.S. adults by Coldwell Banker Real Estate, home tech is now a considerable consideration in home buying. Of those surveyed, 71 percent "want a move-in ready home" (nothing too surprising there.) But among those respondents, 44 percent said that "smart home technology should already be installed" and 57 percent "would consider an older home updated if it had smart home technology." These results suggest that smart home tech may no longer be a fancy perk for homes, but an expectation.

Well, is that really the case?

This week, we want to hear what gets you most excited or curious about smart home tech—which products would you definitely want for your home in the future (if not already) and what are your most pressing questions?

And if you’re in the less enthusiastic camp, what’s holding you back from taking the plunge? Is it the cost? Qualms about navigating the crowded marketplace? Or general skepticism it’ll make your life easier at all?
