Ask Flipped: Is it tacky to put balustrades in my turrets?

New, 3 comments

I’m worried what my peasant neighbors will think of me

Welcome back to Ask Flipped, where we answer very real questions from readers who are having problems with home decor, design, or anything else. Do you have a question? Write it on a post-it note and throw it into a strong gust of wind. If it was meant to be, we will find the post-it and answer the question.

Dear Flipped,

I have a question about taste: Would it be tacky for me to widen the window openings in my castle’s turrets and install balustrades? On the one hand, I’m afraid of appearing too ostentatious to the many servants in my employ, as well the guards who patrol the turrets. (I doubt that any of them could even spell the word balustrade.) There are also my neighbors (technically, serfs) to consider. They are a pitiful bunch of mud farmers and peasants, and I’m worried they would think the balustrades are over the top.

What do you think? Also the railings on the balustrades would be made of gold.

Thanks,

A Reader

Dear Reader,

You’ve got to just do what makes you happy. Don’t worry so much about what other people think. If you want gold balustrades on in your turrets, then you deserve gold balustrades in your turrets. If you want wall-to-wall carpeting made out of the fur of an endangered species, then you go out and get it. If you want to take your land away from those serfs and build a second castle and pretend that it is involved in a torrid romance with your first castle, go right ahead. I have lots more ideas if you’re interested.

Hope that helps,

Flipped
