New Zealand's backcountry huts inspired this breezy, open home

A home inspired by New Zealand’s backcountry huts has been completed in the settlement of Puhoi, just 50 kilometers, or about 31 miles north of Auckland. Designed by the director of local firm LTD Architectural David Maurice for him and his own family, the simple structure comprises a timber frame, shed roof, terrace, and a metal-sided annex.

The star of the aptly called “back country house” would be the main level’s living and dining area, which opens onto the expansive deck—not to mention to the breathtaking views of the landscape—by way accordion glass doors. This configuration allows the entire common space to seamlessly incorporate indoor-outdoor living. A concrete outdoor fireplace and two sunken tubs provide even more incentive to stay outdoors all year long.

Upstairs, the mezzanine master bedroom occupies the space under the sloping, skylit roof and includes a long work desk that runs along the far wall beneath a large horizontal window. Overhanging eaves along the back of the house provide coverage on one side of the deck as well as privacy in the annex, where additional bedrooms are located. Have a look.
