Located on the southwestern coast of Florida, Sarasota is a booming arts and cultural capital of the state, known for the Sarasota School of Architecture that flourished in the post-war era. Sarasota Modern’s style of open floor plans, indoor-outdoor living, and large planes of glass made a lasting mark on the architectural world, and that heritage can be seen on any tour of the town today.

In Lido Shores, a sandbar neighborhood full of modernistic homes dating to the 1950s, architects have worked to reinvent what contemporary Sarasota homes can look like. A home called Strandhus—Norwegian for beach house—is the perfect example of this, and the five-bedroom, six-bath home just hit the market.

The property’s original structure was a modest 1960s house that architect Jerry Sparkman transformed into a beachy, open-air retreat. A second renovation in 2018 and a purchase of the adjacent lot resulted in a brand new luxurious master wing and office, connected to the main house by a glass hallway.

The compound features vaulted ceilings and cypress wood walls that add warmth to the expansive windows. Sliding glass doors disappear seamlessly, opening the great room to a wading pool on one side and a 40-foot lap pool and spa on the other.

The kitchen is light and airy, crafted with a blue glass mosaic tile backsplash and custom white cabinetry. Other perks include multiple courtyards, an al fresco kitchen, and a roof deck that provides views of the beach.
