How to DIY a smart mirror

This is the fifth episode in our six-part video series where Bob Clagett of I Like to Make Stuff takes on home DIY projects inspired by the features of the new Ford F-150.

What’s your morning routine? Maybe you fly out the door with no time to spare, or maybe you’re an early bird who luxuriates in the quiet morning hours. Whatever your preference, any morning can be enhanced with this impressive DIY project that integrates a smart productivity screen — which can show you the weather, today’s headlines, and more — right into your mirror. This project was inspired by the 8-inch LCD productivity screen in the new Ford F-150 that tells you everything you need to know about your truck, from its fuel status to its tire pressure.

Step 1: Install the Magic Mirror software onto your Raspberry Pi

This is the most technical element of this DIY project, but don’t fear! Even if you’ve never coded before, Raspberry Pi is a great place to start. Familiarize yourself with the platform first, then follow this step-by-step guide.

Step 2: Build a box for the TV

Measure your TV. Using those dimensions, build a box that will fit the TV snugly.

Step 3: Make a frame to go around the outside

Make a picture frame to put around the outside of the TV screen. This helps your smart mirror look more like a regular mirror — and it will up the surprise factor when people realize it’s way cooler than just that.

Step 4: Paint or stain the frame

You’ll want your smart mirror to match your decor, so paint or stain the frame accordingly.

Step 5: Apply the mirror film

To create the mirror, apply the mirror film to a regular piece of plexiglass. Make sure the surface of the plexiglass is completely clean before you apply the film; otherwise, dust specks will appear under the film. Peel off the backing of the film and spray down the plexiglass with water. Lay down the film and then use a squeegee to get rid of air bubbles. Let dry.

Step 6: Cut off the edges of the film

Use an X-Acto knife to trim off the excess film.

Step 7: Attach the frame

Set the mirrored plexiglass in place on top of the TV, and put the frame on top of the box. Nail the frame onto the box to secure it into place.

Step 8: Hang the mirror on the wall

Hang the mirror on the wall, plug it in, and power it up.
