Almost 70 years after the first of them were constructed in the suburbs of San Francisco, homes built by the hugely influential California developer Joseph Eichler are more popular than ever, riding high on the seemingly unending wave of nostalgia for all things midcentury modern. Though designed by a variety of architects—including of-era luminaries like A. Quincy Jones, Raphael Soriano, and Robert Anshen—Eichler's homes have a remarkably consistent visual vocabulary, including his trademark tongue-and-groove ceilings, post-and-beam interiors, floor-to-ceiling windows, and beloved atria.
Built with the housing needs of post-World War II Americans in mind, Eichler's airy, light-filled homes were intended to be utilitarian yet welcoming, and in that he succeeded spectacularly, creating a distinctive feel that transcended the necessarily repetitive design templates required to build thousands of homes over two decades. Today, his homes are snapped up by eager home buyers almost as quickly as they come on the market, often at reasonable (for California, anyway) prices. Here now: all the Eichler homes for sale right this very minute, mapped.
